An assessment comes before a cleaning schedule

The EPA’s homeowner guidance identifies substantial visible mold in relevant system components, vermin, or excessive debris being released as reasons to consider cleaning. A small amount of ordinary household dust is not, by itself, proof that the whole system needs cleaning.

Visible marks are not a reliable mold diagnosis. If moisture or suspected contamination is involved, get the cause assessed and addressed; cleaning alone may not resolve it. This site does not offer mold assessment or remediation.

Describe what you have observed

Keep the description practical: which rooms are affected, where debris appears, when it started, and whether a filter change or building project preceded it. Photographs can help explain the concern, but they do not replace access to the system.

If the issue is uneven temperature or a system that does not cool properly, tell the service contact. A cleaning inquiry should not obscure a possible equipment or duct-repair problem.

After a renovation or a move

Ask what protection was used around vents during the project, whether the HVAC ran during dusty work, and what cleanup the contractor completed. For a recently purchased property, service records may be more useful than its age alone. The goal is to decide what inspection or service is justified by the available evidence.
